Funding for Restaurants: The Grants, Bursaries and Free Training on Your Plate in 2026

Funding for Restaurants: The Grants, Bursaries and Free Training on Your Plate in 2026

Ask a restaurateur what keeps them awake and it is rarely the food. It is the wage bill, the energy bill, and the quiet fear of losing a good floor team to the place across the road. The happy news for 2026 is that there is public money aimed at all three — and a chunk of it is specific to restaurants and food-led venues. Here is the plate, laid out, with who each scheme is for and how to claim it.

One caution before the courses arrive: funding schemes shift, top up and close, and eligibility always turns on your own numbers. Treat this as a map to the right doors — confirm the live terms with the body that runs each scheme before you spend a euro or fill a form, and on the grants below, never incur a cost before you are approved.

New for restaurants: the WSET wine and spirits bursary

The freshest support on the table is one restaurants have been asking for: proper drinks training, paid for. In August, the Restaurants Association of Ireland's Benevolent Fund launched a WSET Ireland Bursary Programme, offering up to 20 people funded places on WSET Level 1 and Level 2 Awards in Wines and Spirits through Irish course providers. To be eligible you need to be 18 or over, resident in the Republic, and able to complete the official application; the exact deadlines and participating providers are being announced by the Association. A team that can talk confidently about a wine list sells more of it, so this is training that pays back on the very next service. As RAI chief executive Adrian Cummins put it, investing in people is one of the best investments a hospitality business can make.

Fully funded skills: RH Skillnet

The bursary sits on top of a bigger, permanent resource that too few restaurants use. RH Skillnet — the hospitality training network backed by Skillnet Ireland and the National Training Fund — runs restaurant and hospitality skills programmes around the country, and many are fully funded or heavily subsidised for the businesses that take part. Everything from front-of-house standards to supervisory and management skills is on offer, at a fraction of commercial training rates or free. For a sector fighting to retain staff, structured, funded development is one of the cheapest loyalty tools going, and it is sitting there largely unclaimed.

The grant that suits a kitchen: Energy Efficiency Grant

Now to the hard cash. A restaurant's energy profile — refrigeration, cooking line, lighting, extraction — is exactly what the Local Enterprise Office Energy Efficiency Grant is built to tackle. It covers 75% of eligible costs, from €750 up to €10,000, for businesses with 1 to 50 employees, and hospitality is explicitly eligible. Replacement refrigeration, LED lighting, smart controls and heat pumps all qualify. Three-quarters of the cost of a new, efficient walk-in coming from a grant is the kind of maths that transforms a "someday" upgrade into a this-quarter one. The rule is absolute: apply through your Local Enterprise Office and get approval before you order anything.

Sell more without a bigger room: Trading Online Voucher

Every cover you turn away at the door is lost forever, but a cover you capture online is found money. The Trading Online Voucher, again via the Local Enterprise Offices, offers up to €2,500 (typically matched euro-for-euro) to build or upgrade your website and online sales — online ordering, bookings, gift-voucher sales, the digital front door that lets a customer spend with you at 11pm from their couch. For an independent restaurant still running on a social page and a phone, this is among the fastest returns in the whole list.

Free money to find your savings: the energy audit voucher

If you are not sure where your energy is going, SEAI's Support Scheme for Energy Audits will fund a professional to find out, with a €2,000 voucher toward a full audit for SMEs spending at least €10,000 a year on energy at the site. The report becomes the evidence base for the Energy Efficiency Grant, so it is usually the sensible first move rather than an afterthought.

If you are rural: don't forget LEADER

A restaurant anywhere outside the city boundaries of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway should also look hard at LEADER, the EU-funded rural development programme. It can support tourism-facing food projects at generous rates — up to 75% of a capital project — through your Local Action Group, provided the idea fits your area's Local Development Strategy. If your restaurant is part of the reason people visit your region, that is exactly the story LEADER exists to back. The current programme runs to the end of 2026.

How to actually claim it

Go in order and it is far less daunting than the paperwork implies. Register your team for the WSET bursary and RH Skillnet programmes as calls open — those cost you nothing but a form. Book the €2,000 energy audit, then take its shortlist to your Local Enterprise Office for the Energy Efficiency Grant, securing written approval before you place an order. Run the Trading Online Voucher alongside, since it is a separate pot. Keep tax clearance, accounts and supplier quotes ready so you can move inside a window rather than after it. And make your Local Enterprise Office a contact, not a last resort — a ten-minute call tells you what is open this month.

Stack them and the picture is genuinely cheering: funded drinks training, free upskilling for your team, 75% off the efficiency upgrades that shrink your biggest bills, and a grant-built website that sells while you sleep. The money is budgeted and waiting. In a trade where margins are won in the details, the restaurants that thrive are simply the ones that made the calls. Make yours this week.
